Can a Handyman Install a Ceiling Fan?

Yes: replacing a light fixture with a ceiling fan, or swapping an old fan for a new one, is standard handyman work. In the DMV it typically costs $160 to $400 including assembly, hanging, wiring at the existing box, balancing and testing.

The one thing that actually matters

The electrical box in your ceiling must be fan-rated. A standard light box is not designed to hold a spinning 40-pound appliance. A good installer checks this first and installs a fan-rated brace box if needed: that is the difference between a fan that lasts twenty years and one that wobbles loose.

When you need a licensed electrician instead

If there is no existing fixture and no wiring where you want the fan, new circuit work may fall under electrical licensing rules. An honest handyman tells you where that line is: we handle fixture-for-fixture swaps and wiring fished from existing switches, and bring in the licensed electrical trade when a job requires it.

Wobble, noise and remotes

Most wobble is fixable with balancing, most noise means a loose canopy or worn bearings, and most modern fans include remotes worth setting up properly. See our ceiling fan installation page or a real install we photographed.
