Replacing a garbage disposal in the DMV typically costs $150 to $300 in labor, plus $90 to $250 for the unit depending on power and brand. But before you spend anything, try the two free fixes.
Try these first
The reset button: a red button on the bottom of the unit pops out when the motor overloads: press it. The hex key: a jammed disposal hums but will not spin; insert the hex key that came with it (or a 1/4-inch Allen) into the bottom socket and work it back and forth to free the jam. These two solve a surprising share of dead disposals.
When replacement is the answer
Leaking from the body (not the connections), tripping the breaker repeatedly, or grinding weakly after a jam is cleared: those are motor and seal failures, and replacement beats repair on cost every time.
Which unit to buy
A 3/4 HP unit from a major brand is the sweet spot for most homes: quieter and less jam-prone than 1/3 HP builder units, cheaper than 1 HP overkill. We install either way: yours or ours, itemized honestly. Details on our disposal installation page.
